Growing up in an educated family in Arkansas, I’ve always understood the importance of a college
education. When I started college in
1982, I thought a business degree was what I desired. I come from a single parent home and from
1982 to 1989 I struggled with many personal issues and failures, as well as
changing my major numerous times. In the
end, I still returned to business completing an A.S. degree in Secretarial
Science and completing 3 years toward a B.S. degree in Office Management. I took a twelve year break from my studies to
start a family and work full time and moved to two other states before
returning to Northwest
Arkansas five years
ago. Currently I am employed full time
at the University of Arkansas as an Administrative Secretary and attending school part time. I will graduate in May of 2006 with a B.S. in
Vocational Education with an emphasis in Human Resource Development.
Human Resource Development (HRD) is a
field especially suited for enhancing the potential of people, as individuals
or groups. This is done through training
and capacity-building. I want to obtain my
master’s in HRD to utilize what I have personally learned through life
experiences, work experiences, and education in the field to help people
realize and use their potential. I have
been in the working world for a total of 16 years as a secretary. During that time, I have worked for large corporations, small school districts, hospitals, real estate
offices as well as the University
of Arkansas in a variety of positions. I have had the opportunity to work with many
different management styles and feel that these experiences have given me the
job knowledge I need to become a good manager myself.
Once I complete my bachelor’s degree, my
plans are to apply for a position in a human resources department with a major
corporation and continue my education with a master’s degree in Human Resource
Development or Business Administration.
